Feed Our Kids Fund-Donations.jpg
One mission of the King William County School Nutrition Department is to provide our children with safe, nutritious, and quality meals while encouraging students to develop life-long skills and knowledge to make healthy food choices. Oftentimes, our King William families are faced with economic challenges that make it difficult to maintain sufficient funds on their child/children’s meal account. By donating to the Feed Our Kids Fund, you can help a struggling family cover the cost of nourishing meals for their child/children. Your donation may be directed to a specific class, grade, school, or individual, or to remove past due meal debt. Donations can be made using My Payments Plus (www.mypaymentsplus.com), clicking on the "Feed Our Kids-School Nutrition Donation" Event and Activity. Please specify how you would like your donation utilized. For more information, please contact the King William School Nutrition Department at 804-769-3434 extension 550 or [email protected]

MEDIA RELEASE 2023-2024

POLICY FOR PROVIDING FREE OR REDUCED PRICE MEALS

Date: July 1, 2023

School Division: King William County Public Schools

today announced its policy for providing free or reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch, and/or School Breakfast Programs. Each school and/or central school nutrition office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

Household size and income will be used to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines, shown in the chart below, may be eligible for either free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may be automatically eligible for free meals.  Children who are homeless, migrant, or runaway may also be automatically eligible for free meals. Foster children, who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court, are eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. Children who are members of households participating in WIC may also be eligible for free or reduced-price meals based on the household’s income.

Meal Benefits

Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free or reduced-price meals for their children. Applications are also available at the principal's office in each school, at the central office, and online via the School Nutrition page of the District website. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households must only fill out one application per household and return it to the school division. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. The information households provide on the application will be used for determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. For school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price benefits, households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) only have to list their child(ren)'s name and SNAP or TANF case number and an adult household member must sign the application. Households who do not list a SNAP or TANF case number, including WIC households, must list the names of all household members, the amount and frequency of the income received by each household member, and the last four digits of the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. If the household member does not have a social security number, the household member must indicate that a social security number is not available. The application must be signed by an adult household member in order to be approved.

Under the provisions of the free and reduced price meal policy,

Sherri Harris, Director of School Nutrition, will review applications and determine eligibility. An application for free or reduced-price meals cannot be approved unless it is complete.  Households dissatisfied with the ruling of the eligibility determining official may wish to discuss the decision with the official on an informal basis. Households wishing to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may make a request either verbally or in writing to:

Dr. Charles Wagner, Division Superintendent, P.O Box 185 King William, VA 23086; 804-769-3434

Households may apply for free or reduced-price meals at any time during the school year. If a household is not eligible now but has a change, such as a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, becomes unemployed or qualifies for SNAP or TANF, the household should contact the school for an application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household's income falls at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.

Households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may not have to complete an application for free or reduced-price student meals.  School officials will determine eligibility for free meals based on documentation, obtained directly from the Virginia Department of Social Services, that a child is a member of a household currently receiving SNAP or TANF. School officials will notify these households in writing of their eligibility. Households who are notified of their eligibility, but who do not want their children to receive free meals, must contact the school. SNAP and TANF households must complete an application if they are not notified in writing of their automatic eligibility within the first 10 days of the new school year.

Our Mission:  The King William County Public School Nutrition Program believes it takes a team to educate a child.  Education does not end in the classroom, but extends to all areas in a child's life.  School Nutrition is a vital part of a child's education.  We are committed to serving safe, nutritious, and quality meals while encouraging students to develop life-long skills and knowledge to make healthy food choices.

Our Vision:  The King William County School Nutrition Program will provide students and staff nutritionally sound meals that support the goal of the effective delivery of academic and/or extra-curricular education.

ABOUT US

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements, which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines.  We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition of students.  All schools within our District participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP).  Our breakfast and lunch meals are required to meet specific nutritional guidelines according to different grade level groups (K-5, 6-8, and 9-12).  For more detailed information about these federal programs and regulations, please visit the USDA Food and Nutrition Services Nutrition Programs homepage.

King William County's School Nutrition Department serves convenient, economical and healthy school meals, because nutrition is a vital part of a child's education.  These nutritious, great-tasting meals support their achievements in school and promote healthy lifestyles. We strive to provide outstanding service and high quality "kid friendly" meals that meet the latest federal and state requirements.  We look forward to serving your child/children!

The School Nutrition Program is a totally self-supporting program.  The program receives no local tax funding or funding from the school system.  The program is expected to make all of its own money.  Funds are generated from the sales that are made each day in the school cafeterias and monthly federal reimbursements.

From the funds, the program pays the salaries and benefits for our School Nutrition Staff, purchases all foods, supplies, and equipment.  We have many repairs on our existing equipment that always needs to be taken care of.  As you can see, the school nutrition program is operating a business.  This is information that most people do not realize and I feel it is important to share with our families and community.  Despite all the regulations, which are many, we are doing our very best to serve our students nutritious and quality meals each day.

We hope that your child/children enjoy the experience of eating breakfast and lunch with us, and we appreciate their business.  If your child does not eat school meals, we would invite them (and you) to give us a try.  Our meals are "Cooked with Care, and Served With Pride".  We would love to have them as our customer.

Please call our School Nutrition Office is you have any questions or would like to know more about our program.  We are here to help.  Our phone number is 804-769-3434 ext 550.

Director of School Nutrition
