Students and parents are encouraged to use the mobile app MealViewer to learn more about the nutritional value of the food available, and to rate the items they have purchased from the school cafeteria. We are excited to provide this digital tool to receive feedback, while also promoting a vibrant and healthy school community. POLICY FOR PROVIDING FREE OR REDUCED PRICE MEALS

today announced its policy for providing free or reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch, and/or School Breakfast Programs. Each school and/or central school nutrition office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.
Household size and income will be used to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price meal benefits. Children from households whose income is at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines, shown in the chart below, may be eligible for either free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may be automatically eligible for free meals. Children who are homeless, migrant, or runaway may also be automatically eligible for free meals. Foster children, who are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court, are eligible for free meals regardless of the income of the household with whom they reside. Children who are members of households participating in WIC may also be eligible for free or reduced-price meals based on the household’s income.
Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free or reduced-price meals for their children.
Applications are also available at the principal's office in each school and at the central office. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households must only fill out one application per household and return it to the school division. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. The information households provide on the application will be used for determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications may be verified at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. For school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced-price benefits, households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) only have to list their child(ren)'s name and SNAP or TANF case number and an adult household member must sign the application. Households who do not list a SNAP or TANF case number, including WIC households, must list the names of all household members, the amount and frequency of the income received by each household member, and the last four digits of the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. If the household member does not have a social security number, the household member must indicate that a social security number is not available. The application must be signed by an adult household member in order to be approved.
Under the provisions of the free and reduced price meal policy,
Sherri Harris, Director of School Nutrition will review applications and determine eligibility. An application for free or reduced-price meals cannot be approved unless it is complete. Households dissatisfied with the ruling of the eligibility determining official may wish to discuss the decision with the official on an informal basis. Households wishing to make a formal appeal for a hearing on the decision may make a request either verbally or in writing to:

Households may apply for free or reduced-price meals at any time during the school year. If a household is not eligible now but has a change, such as a decrease in household income, an increase in household size, becomes unemployed or qualifies for SNAP or TANF, the household should contact the school for an application. Such changes may make the children of the household eligible for benefits if the household's income falls at or below the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.
Households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits (formerly the Food Stamp Program) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) may not have to complete an application for free or reduced-price student meals. School officials will determine eligibility for free meals based on documentation, obtained directly from the Virginia Department of Social Services, that a child is a member of a household currently receiving SNAP or TANF. School officials will notify these households in writing of their eligibility. Households who are notified of their eligibility, but who do not want their children to receive free meals, must contact the school. SNAP and TANF households must complete an application if they are not notified in writing of their automatic eligibility within the first 10 days of the new school year.
Free and Reduced Price Meal Application
If you have not filled out an application for this school year (2024-2025), please submit one for your family. Benefits will stop on October 1, 2024 if we do not have an application on file for the current school year. It is important to fill out an application if you wish to receive any benefits that are tied to the Free and Reduced Application. ALL students who qualify for free or reduced priced meals will eat breakfast and lunch for free for this school year.

Online Meal Account Payment System
You may use the online meal account payment system, MyPaymentsPlus, to check balances, review your family account, deposit funds, view purchase history, and more. The system is FREE to use unless you add funds to your student's meal account. Meal Charging Policy
There are no student meal charge limits at any level within the District (Primary, Elementary, Middle and High). Students will be permitted to charge complete, reimbursable meals if funds are not available on the meal account to cover the cost of that meal.
If a parent or guardian does NOT want their child/children to charge meals to the meal account, documentation from the parent (Meal Charging Permission Form) must be completed and kept of file in the School Nutrition Office. A meal charging block will be placed on the student meal account.
Students that do not have funds on their meal account to cover the cost of their meal will receive a complete, reimbursable meal. To prevent shaming and overt eligibility status identification, alternate meals will not be served under any circumstance, to any student.
An automated call system is utilized, at all grade levels, to inform the parent/guardian of a negative balance. Negative balance calls are made each Monday and Thursday, unless a holiday or school closing falls on those days.
In addition to the automated call system, negative balance letters are sent home weekly at the Primary and Elementary levels. Typically these letters are included in the student’s Tuesday folder, unless a holiday or school closing falls on a Tuesday.
For those students having an email address on file, emails are sent on each Tuesday and Friday with negative balance information, unless a holiday or school closing falls on those days. These emails are sent at all levels. If an email address is not on file and the letter cannot be emailed, it is printed and sent home to the parent via the student. Written communication for the Middle and High school level are only sent home with the student when an email address is not on file.
All communication relating to the school meal debt will be directed to the student’s parent or guardian. Communication may be made by letter, email or phone call.
Students are NOT allowed to charge a la carte food or drink items (extra entrée and side items, ice cream, bottled water, drinks, snack items, etc.) to their meal account unless sufficient funds are available on the account to cover the full cost of their meal and the a la carte items.
In the event a student brings in cash to purchase a la carte item(s), and there is a negative balance on their meal account, that student will be permitted to purchase the a la carte item(s). The student will be encouraged to apply any change to their negative balance at the time of sale.
To prevent shaming and overt identification of eligibility status, cashiers are not permitted to inform students of the need for funds on their meal account.
All households are encouraged to complete a Free or Reduced Prices Meal Application each year. Free and Reduced Priced Meal Applications can be completed at any time during the school year, but it is encouraged for households to complete and submit one prior to the start of the school year. A paper application can be picked up from any school office. An online application is available on the School Nutrition page of the District website. A pdf version that can be printed is available on the School Nutrition page of the District website.
Student eligibility based on income (Free or Reduced Priced Meal Application) carries over from one school year to the next, for the first 30 operating days only. If a new application has not been received during the first 30 days of operation, the student eligibility will revert to Full-Price (paid) meals.
Only one Free/Reduced Priced Meal Application needs to be completed per household. Students from different schools within the District can be listed on the same application.

To file a program discrimination complaint, a Complainant should complete a Form AD-3027, USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form which can be obtained online at: https://www.usda.gov/sites/default/files/documents/USDA-OASCR%20P-Complaint-Form-0508-0002-508-11-28-17Fax2Mail.pdf, from any USDA office, by calling (866) 632-9992, or by writing a letter addressed to USDA. The letter must contain the complainant’s name, address, telephone number, and a written description of the alleged discriminatory action in sufficient detail to inform the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights (ASCR) about the nature and date of an alleged civil rights violation.
